Bug Description

The new maintainer of the Debian smartmontools package re-added update-smart-drivedb in smartmontools 7.0-1.

See this commit for the related comment in README.Debian:

Please consider to re-add the script also in the Ubuntu package. In the past, the Ubuntu package usually followed Debian (

Note that since smartmontools 6.6 the script verifies the download with gpg.


PS: We released smartmontools-7.1 at 2019-12-30.

We have recently merged 7.0-2 and there wasn't too much Delta remaining.
In fact it came down to just a patch to let it run on diskless systems.

Debian chose a different way to achieve the same in bug
The solution is

That should work for us just as much and I think we can make it a sync again which will also bring in the update-smart-drivedb that you are looking for.

Let me get a second opinion on that before I sync it.

I tested the Debian's patch to start the daemon even in diskless systems locally and it worked fine. I agree that smartmontools should become a sync from Debian from now on.

I triggered the sync, it is in proposed and built fine.
Lets wait if tests complete as well - with i386 removal and python3 switch there is enough in flight to have a bumpy road.

This bug was fixed in the package smartmontools - 7.1-1

smartmontools (7.1-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release.
  * rules: removed get-orig-source target.
  * New patch to start daemon even on diskless system (Closes: #862908).
