Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In System->Preferences->Keyboard, Layouts tab, if you have more than one layout no option to choose default layout for the system (no radio button like in karmik or any other option), and if you are typing in other language, not English and open new app, suppose terminal, so layout for the new app will be last typed layout. I have tried to change trow gconf-editor (/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/defaultGroup) - no results.
"Separate layout for each window" works.

Thank you for your bug report, you can change the layout order, doesn't it work for you? Could you describe what you do exactly?

Changed in gnome-control-center (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

I have this issue too, I use two keyboard layouts: US and DE (German). Although US is at the top of the list (I believe this is how the default is set), sometimes the layout changes randomly to DE; usually when switching apps (although "Separate layout for each window" is disabled).

I believe the older Gnome versions had a "default" checkbox for each entry in the layout list.

Changed in gnome-control-center (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Confirmed

I did, and it still does not work.

>>Could you describe what you do exactly?
Nothing. I just installed Lucid with default language only (English) and added Russian. Layout does not switches to default (to English) when I opening a new window. In Configuration Editor - /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/defaultGroup the value is -1, if I changing it to 0 (first layout in list, for me its English) - no effect, still doesn't work. For example this issue was in Jaunty, but setting right value in gconf-editor helps, in Lucid not :(.

@Christian Stefanescu norok ;)
There are no check box for default layout but you can set it from gconf-editor in section
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/defaultGroup
0 - is upper layout in the list and so on...
Unfortunately it doesn't work (for me)

I found that this bug appear when compiz is enabled, disabling compiz solves the problem.

I have installed Lucid on the second machine with Intel graphics (on the current I have ATI HD 3xxx) card and there no such problem (new window == default layout). I tried open drivers and proprietary drivers - no changes. How can I localize the problem?

The gconf-editor trick you mentioned earlier seemed to have worked for me.
Haven't had the problem since.
