This problem started after installing Ubuntu 9.04 on all my machines.
Changing keyboard didn't solve the problem.
If X.org isn't started, there is no problem.
By disabling the: "Pointer can be controlled using the keypad." option in gnome, this problem is solved.
(this an be toggled on and of by pressing "ctrl+alt+num lock".)
