Ran into the same problem.

Upgraded from an up-to-date Gutsy to Hardy yesterday. No alpha, beta or RC versions of Hardy installed. Hardy distribution from the ubuntu.mirrors.skynet.be mirror. Numpad broken after the upgrade.

Same solution: switch "allow to control pointer using keyboard" to off.
