I've built (on trusty) and installed the unity-control-center package from the PPA, and unity-settings-daemon from utopic, and now I have a mouse pointer speed option in the settings. That setting was missing when I used the original trusty packages.

Now another problem is that the mouse cursor is pretty fast, even when using the slowest setting. My mouse has a hardware DPI change button though, so I can fix that. :-)
