The trash applet doesn't bug fine with removable medias, we have some bugs about it: bug #43996 and bug #35834 claim that it counts the USB stick crash but doesn't update on eject, bug #32466 has the same issue as you, I'm marking that bug as duplicate of it. We don't have any patch for that applet so that's an upstream issue
