Thanks for your bug. That works fine for me. Do you still have the issue? Could you get a backtrace of gnome-panel hanging?
When you get the hang:
- gdb $(pidof gnome-panel)
(gdb) thread apply all bt

And copy that to a comment

My apologies, this bug will probably need to be moved: it still happens, but now I realize that its only freezing the first mixer applet, and not the whole panel (I'm pretty sure it was freezing all of the gnome-panel before, but you guys must have fixed that heh).

Here is the backtrace, but on gnome-volume-manager instead of gnome-panel:

Thanks a lot Sebastien!

Arrr! I just realized that the frozen program is the mixer_applet2, not gnome-volume-manager. =x
Sorry... I'll get this right one of these tries.

Here is the (hopefully) relevant backtrace:

Thanks again.

Thank you for the comment, it does the same on my dapper installation, I'll look at fixing that today

I've forwarded the issue upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335432

That might be the cause of the gnome-panel bug #33699
