Bug Description

With certain gnome-panel-applets combinations, gnome-panel fails to shut down properly on session logout. Found applets-combination:

- Ubuntu default combination
- mixer_applet2 and battstat-applet-2. This occurs only if mixer_applet2 resides left from battstat-applet-2 in gnome-panel. Additional requirements for this to occur: mixer_applet2 must be added through the "Add to panel..."-dialogue. Moving an existing mixer_applet2 from right of battstat-applet2 to left of battstat-applet2 could not be confirmed to produce the criticized behaviour.

How are you sure it's due to the mixer?

I've also experienced that the logout is hanging (only the background image is left). Switching to a console and killing the mixer made the logout continue.

Killing the mixer makes the logout continue. I believe killing esd also makes the logout continue but I assume this is because it wakes up the mixer.

I can confirm this... killing the mixer applet leads to a normal logout

might be caused by bug #34519 which is a mixer_applet crasher

The mixer issue is fixed with that upload:

 gnome-applets (2.14.0-0ubuntu5) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * debian/patches/07_mixer_crash_on_logout_fix.patch:
     - upstream patch, fix the mixer crasher on logout (Ubuntu: #33699, #34519)

Could you try if your issue is fixed after updating the package and starting a new session so the new code is running?

3 confirmations sounds good enough to close. If it still happens to
anyone: please reopen.
