On my sony vaio VGN-FZ11M, running metacity, and having been upgraded successfully from feisty, volume change on the keyboard shortcut used to produce a small box on screen showing the volume level. On gutsy, I get a larger grey square at the bottom somewhat offcenter from the screen with just a grey square, no controls.
