I have exactly the same problem.

Ubuntu: 9.04,
Architecture: i386
package: xgnokii
source package: gnokii

$ gnokii --identify
GNOKII Version 0.6.26
IMEI : 359750002556592
Manufacturer : Nokia
Model : 6021
Product name : RM-94
Revision : V 04.50

When starting xgnokii the phone displays that a connection has been set up.
When the xgnokii stops working, the phone also displays the message that the connection has been ended.
