In a GNOME-environment (Ubuntu), the browser to start should look at the following location in gconf-editor:
/desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec (currently in my situation: firefox)
This can be done while installing or even runtime.
Either way, gmail-notify is then configuration free (at least for this particular issue).
