One extra comment here, referring to comment #3.
Package open-vm-tools-desktop is in main and needs to stay in main.
So we'll need to rebuild against the new API to let you fully migrate (or better to get rid of the old one).
Server team (= Bryce) will work on the recent (3 weeks) 12.2.5 soon anyway.
But AFAICS from your link that isn't trivial and nothing in [1] mentions GTK4, nor is there any request filed [2]. GKT3 was added as 2+3 compat [3], and while I have no gut-feeling if 3/4 would be similar at least that wasn't too huge.
So I can not guarantee that we (server team) suddenly can let go of GTK3 asap.
If I could ask you (Jeremy) to talk to Bryce, sort out together what could and what could not be done.
And then maybe file an upstream bug to ask/discuss/track their willingness
