There is currently a bug report open regarding a bug in glibc behavior with threads when lock elision is enabled (a new feature in the version of glibc in 16.04):
Is it possible the problem seen in TensorFlow is the same? There's various information on that bug about how to test with lock elision disabled, links to glibc test builds, etc.
