Sorry, in an attempt to make some progress in chasing this issue, I found myself making a new bug report here, and then marked this earlier bug report as a duplicate because I forgot it while wondering around the maze ;-)

Anyway I think we might achieve some progress there -- as I've managed to add Iain Lane, a Debian and Ubuntu developer who made that particular patch, to subscribers, and I guess he's now trying to find a fix for this problem without getting rid of that patch which he says is also essential.
