Bug Description

Binary package hint: ghostscript

I am running Hardy Heron 8.04, Release 8.04, Gimp, Gutenprint. All packages are up to date, as suggested by standard updates. I didn't install anything special with respect to Gimp or the printer.

When printing from Gimp to my Epson Stylus Photo R2400, nothing is output. Printer gets stopped. CUPS error log shows "(/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster) stopped with status 1!" and "Job stopped due to filter errors."
I attached more detail information, all I could get hold of.

Please help, because Ubuntu is pretty useless, if I cannot print.

Best Regards,
Bernd

Bernd, thanks for your report. The attachment you speak about is missing.
Please attach the output of the printingbug info script and your cups error_log to this bug report as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems.
Are you able to print in other applications other than the GIMP ?

Bernd,
Can you attach a complete cups_error log instead of only the error lines when trying to print from either the GIMP, gThumb or gedit. Usually there is some information around the error lines which gives a clue about the problem.

Hi there,

I've got the same problem with my Epson Stylus C82. I've tried to print to this device using an Edimax printserver (1x parallel, 2 x USB) using the parallel port. The print process died throwing the message (CUPS 1.3.7 Hardy webinterface):
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed

In Errorlog is following line:
(/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster) crashed on signal 11!

I've attached the errorlog in debug mode.

I've tried several applications (firefox, gThumb,...) and document types (pdf, html,...) the result is always the same. C82 won't print.

BTW:
1) Using printserver from W2k the C82 print properly!
2) Printing out of Hardy to my Konica Minolta 5430DL color laser printer, the output is OK

Frank/frigg

Similar problems here. I have Hardy, with an Epson Stylus Photo R2400, and I have mixed
success in printing to it. It seems to me that the difficulty is something to do with
file size and/or complexity: consequently, the printer options which commit more or less resources
(colour precision, print quality, resolution, and so on) affect whether it will print or not.

Furthermore, images which contain large bitmaps seem to behave systematically worse than
those which don't. (This has the effect that it generally behaves well when it's printing
a test page). The worst that I have found this is when printing A4 images with bitmaps from
Scribus 1.3.3.11, when it will not print at any resolution over 360 dpi (this is, by the way, a 2400 dpi printer, so 360 dpi is basically useless).

There are two failure modes: one of them is for pstoraster to crash immediately on signal 11. The other is for pstoraster to successfully call gs, and for gs to then spend as much time as I have any patience for
(4 hours, in some cases) consuming 100% of CPU but without any trace of output.

This may be related to Bugs 157044 and 159389, both of which seem to be about slowness, and
CPU use, at this stage of printing.

I will, of course, be glad to send any logs or other supporting evidence, if you folks could tell
me what to send. It has taken me a lot of experimentation to find this out.
