This is actually a correctness bug for other applications that use the filesystem and use GHC, right? GHC is returning incorrect values for file size and other stats, is that right? And darcs somehow manages to turn this incorrect answer into a correct but slow answer?

What about the option of patching the GHC shipped by Ubuntu to not have this bug without changing the ABI?
