Gedit won't start. It worked fine a few days ago. Latest updates have been installed

Looks like a result of bug #953957. Could you please try to reproduce this in gedit 3.3.7-0ubuntu2 version?

I just ran today's updates and restarted but gedit still crashes.

Gedit is working again.

The problem turns out to be a gedit-R plugin for running progams using the statistical programming language R. I don't recall installing the R-plugin in 12.04 but I have installed it on 10.04 which uses the same home partition as 10.04. I uninstalled gedit, which uninstalled the r-plucing and gedit-desktop (I think). Gedit started up after re-installing the r-plugin but crashed when the plugin was switched on.

Should have thought of this before. Thanks for your help!
