I suspect it is related to gdm3, but not sure.
On freshly installed final release of bionic, I somtimes cannot login to gnome desktop. It is always preceeded by failed login attempt even though password is correct.

I can switch to a virtual console, but nothing happens when trying to switch back to graphical CTRL+ALT+F7 - stays in console.

It seems that sudo /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart might fix the problem, but I havn't tested extensively yet.

Note also that when the problem occurs there is no XDG_SESSION choices available on the login screen. The "settings" icon next to the login button is gone. After this an attempt to login with correct password will fail, and the second attempt to login with take me to the blank screen + cursor situation described above.

I can't say how to reproduce. On my machine it happens 50% of the times.
