Sorry, you can leave the second part of doing chmod.

Can you please tell us whether you are using authentication information from a different machine (like ldap, nis etc)

Also please post the contents of

/etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver

and the include files listed inside /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver

The @include files can be found in /etc/pam.d itself.
