Weird. It probably worked on 64-bit because of a coincidence of the stack layout.
The problem definitely got worse in gdm 2.30.5 though because it's broken on 64-bit too and that patch doesn't fix the problem. (As noted in the upstream bug report, there's an issue with an invalid ::ffff: in the DISPLAY environment variable and the greeter UI isn't working properly.) The upstream developers re-opened the bug today so hopefully they're going to investigate.
