autologin / timedlogin fail after logout

Bug #607227 reported by sirdan on 2010-07-19

gdm (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Autologin doesn't work when you logout in 10.04. This is a change in behavior from 9.10. When you logout, you are prompted with the standard login screen to supply a user name. It should autologin instead if you have it set to do so.

Confirmed that the same gdm bug still exists on Mythbuntu 10.10 distro. On initial startup of gdm service the timed login works just fine, but after logging out manually it will just sit at the login ID selection screen. We have tried this on fresh installs with the same effect. Using either the timedlogin or autologin options we see the same action. Once a desktop session has been established logging out will leave you sitting at a login selection screen.

This used to work cleanly on our 9.04 setups right out of the box.

In Bug #499337 the reviewer stated that this is not a bug and invalidated that bug report:
How can one use Ubuntu in a kiosk setup if we can't have autologin / timedlogin working everytime?

Our timedlogin config example:

root@tv:/etc/gdm# cat custom.conf

I'm seeing the same issue on a kiosk system which I've just rebuilt on Lucid. It was running Hardy, where the auto-login did occur properly after the user logged out.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

Changed in gdm (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

Still exists in Lucid too (under LTS).

Same bug as #34795, but a different use case.

Please could we have higher importance for this bug? I have to install a patched GDM on the laptops for the school I'm working at to disable the single login check.

Sorry, that should have been bug #56035.
