Bug Description

After updating to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS the login screen shows no user names, just the user icons.
In the follow up screen some letters are missing e.g. "Cancel" is written "Ca l ", see screenshots.
https://www.pic-upload.de/view-35312811/ubuntu18.04.login-screen.png.html

If I toggle the text settings "large texts = on/off" the texts appear. (In this dropdown menu single letters are missing, too.)
So I think it might be a rendering problem.

Any hints?
Thanks in advance...

I am not sure if this is a bug by ubuntu or by me.

Looks like the 'recommended' packages are not installed. Plymouth 'recommend' either plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text or plymouth-theme

From a tty console, run startx
You can reinstall 'ubuntu-desktop' to see if other packages are also missing.

Take time to clean the system after a dist-upgrade, via gtkorphan & bleachbit (as root, carefully select options) and reboot.

Finally glance at warnings/errors via 'journalctl-b'

Thank your for the fast answers.
I have to admit I am just an Ubuntu user not an expert, so your recommendations were difficult for me.

What would "startx" do? My login screen is strange, but afterwards graphical desktop is running.

In another thread I found for "reinstall ubuntu":

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get build-dep ubuntu-desktop

Correct?

Afterwards I'll look what "gtkorphan & bleachbit" mean.

Additional remark: I am using the cinnamon desktop. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.
Can that be the reason that some recommended packages were not installed?

Reinstalling ubuntu-desktop didn't change anything.

So I tried to find other posts with the same problem.
It seems my English was not good enough to use the best keywords in the previous searches. But this time I found something new: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029784/ubuntu-18-04-missing-letters-in-login-screen/1034235
Especially the picture there look exactly like mine.

And that pointed me to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/1760201
So I tried setting WaylandEnable=false and it seems to work
I do not understand what that will do and the it feels more like a workaround than a fix, but that's god enough for me.

Maybe this will help your analysis of the root cause.
