I have a fast box (A) with Dapper and a slow one (B) with Gusty which since the upgrade no longer can XDMCP to (A). I've checked the hint you mentioned and actually managed to login into (A) from (B) but when I try to start the empty nested window the server returns:

Fatal server error:
Unable to open display "".

I tried this from (A) to (A) as well the behavior was the same.

echo $DISPLAY returns :0.0 and when I tried to use it instead of :1 the server returned :-

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
        If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

Any ideas?
