1. My server is Gutsy, my client is Feisty.
Let's enable xdmcp on gutsy: System -> Administration-> Login Window -> Remote, now you can choose between "Same as Local" (in my tests it never has worked. Ie: blank screen and back to local machine) and "Plain with face browser" (here what i wrongly named "simple style").
Feisty connects to Gutsy ONLY if i set "Plain with face browser".
2. My server is Gutsy, my client is Gutsy.
On client side I must Ctrl-Alt-F1 and type "sudo X :1 -query xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the server ip address. System -> Administration-> Login Window ->Remote can be set "Same as Local". Trying to connect on login screen (Options-> Remote Login via XDMCP) does not work. IE: blank screen and back to local.
Final note:
All my tests are done setting in my /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
[xdmcp]
Enable=true
otherwise my server is not listed on welcome login screen clicking on Options-> Remote Login via XDMCP.
Sorry for my bad english.
