On my machine, it definitely looks like a problem with NVidia Drivers.
I installed 8.04. The moment I said yes to restricted drivers, it stopped booting. If I remove restricted drivers, then it boots fine with default 800x600 resolution. It's repeatable.

I also tried using nvidia-glx-new, as suggested in a forum, but that doesn't help either.
