For me it looks like, the problem is not located within the gdesklets code, rather somewhere in the bindings. Ubuntu seems to link it agains python 2.4.x. At least for x86-64 systems. It'd be interesting if someone could remove the pygtk bindings, compile it, link it against python 2.5.x and gdesklets.
