Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdebi

Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
GDebi 0.4.9

What I expected to happen:

Firefox to install Flash Player 10 using GDebi after downloading install_flash_player_10_linux.deb

What happened instead:

Installed Ubuntu within Windows (second option on initial setup menu)
Installation completed. Launched Firefox. Tried to access videos on thedailyshow.com and youtube.com. Both sites required the installation of Flash Player and provided a link. Adobe website provided a list of options:

YUM for linux
tar.gz for Linux
rpm for Linux
deb for Ubuntu 8.04+

Downloaded the .deb file. Firefox offered two options on download

Open with GDebi package installer (default)
Save File

I chose to Open with GDebi. Package installer started working but stopped after a few seconds with the following error message in red:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libcurl3

The following details were presented in GDebi:

**************

After a number of attempts, I decided to install the file the old fashioned way and downloaded and saved the tar.gz file, gunzipped and untarred and ran the installer from the terminal window, which worked fine.

The Adove Flash Player 10 install is looking for the libcurl3 library (libcurl.so.3).

$ sudo bash
# cd /usr/lib
# ln -s libcurl-gnutls.so.4.1.0 libcurl.so.3

Then re-run the flash installer.

same problem here, creating a link didn't solve it.

I followed little help's suggestion to create the link, then downloaded the Flash Player 10 .tar.gz file instead of using the .deb install. I chose the "install from terminal" option, which gave me this bit of probably vital information: you need to close all open browsers while you do the install (I hadn't done that on the 32 previous tries ;-) ). It worked that time.

On 9.04, when Firefox visits a Flash site and does not have the Flash plugin, it should pop up a box that asks you to install Flash, with 3 options (Adobe Flash, swfdec, and gnash). It sounds like, for some reason, that box did not appear... I think that's the real bug.

Ubuntu can't reasonably fix bugs in Adobe's .tar.gz or .deb package, but they can fix this bug with removed the need for the user to ever go to Adobe's site and download/install anything.

Running
sudo apt-get update
and trying to install again should do it.

Thanks for your bugreport.

I can not reproduce this problem here on a fresh jaunty install. I was however able to do it when the package lists were removed (/var/lib/apt/lists/* empty).
