Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

I'm running Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 2, 64bit with kernel 2.6.32-12-generic.
I just noticed that if I press a key, it is not repeated anymore. This behavior is noticed in a terminal: it is impossible to go fast to a certain position.
If I go to Keyboard Preferences (Preferences > Keyboard), the setting "Key presses repeat when key is held down" is not ticked. However, if I tick it, holding a key results in only two key strokes. It looks like this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/127620, but as that one is rather old and one advises to fill in a new bug report, here it is.

If it's xserver-xorg-video-ati, then it is probably not the package from Ubuntu: I'm running the xorg-edgers ppa (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa):

Hmm, after removing that ppa using ppa-purge (and thus downgrading
xserver-xorg-video-ati), I got the same behavior. So, I do not withdraw this
bug report as it happens here also with the official Lucid package.

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-ati

I'm now experiencing this bug also on my laptop (Lucid alpha 2 32-bit),
which runs the binary nvidia driver. I doubt this is related to the
xserver-xorg-video-ati
package.

I also noticed this after an apt-get dist-upgrade in Lucid today. I have intel 965GM chipset, so this is not a DDX driver problem. I think both the kernel and xorg-server was upgraded. Will see if downgrading any of them helps. Moving to xorg-server for now.

I tried to downgrade xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core from 2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9 to 2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu8, but this did not change the key repeat behaviour. Moreover, key repeat works fine both if I use xterm or kde instead of gnome or gnome-failsafe, so this is probably a gnome problem and not an xorg problem. I noticed that there were also a lot of gnome packages that were upgraded. I'm attaching a list of the packages that were installed in my last update (there were quite a few since I hadn't updated in a week). This is the output of `grep upgrade /var/log/dpkg.log | grep "^2010-01-30 18:"`.

I have downgraded a few suspects without success: gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-session, gnome-session-bin, inputattach, gconf2, gconf2-common, gconf-defaults-service, libgconf2-4.

When starting only with xterm instead of gnome, `xset q` has the lines
Keyboard Control:
auto repeat: on key click percent: 0 LED mask: 00000000
After running `gnome-session` which starts gnome, it is changed to:
Keyboard Control:
auto repeat: off key click percent: 0 LED mask: 00000000
This remains after I choose Log out to return to the single xterm.

I have downgraded gnome-session from 2.29.6-0ubuntu1 to 2.28.0-0ubuntu8 without any change. I'm still assigning to gnome-session, since that is at least closer to the right package than xorg-server.

Workaround: In a terminal, write `xset r on`.
