Just wanted to let you know that this still exists. I managed to fix it with some of the solutions on here, I tried doing the chmod 775 gconf.xml.system first to no help. Then I did the:
chmod a+rwx /tmp
Then
chmod -R $USER /home/$USER/.gconf
I also just deleted a lot of stuff from my Documents folder. This was only a small partition and Ubuntu 11.04 imported settings from my dual boot which were much larger.
