I used USB Startup Disk Creator to make a boot thumbdrive from yesterday's (2009-10-20) daily build. I booted to that thumbdrive, and installed only: vim, build-essential, smbfs
I still observed the problem. :(
BTW, the remote file system was being served by Windows XP Profesional, version 2002, SP3
