On request from waldi, I've compiled a -386 kernel (using gcc-4.0) with=20
one change in ./debian/arch/i386/config.386:
=2D CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=3Dy
+ # CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE is not set

The problem was solved when installing from a mini.iso built using this=20
kernel.
