Binary package hint: g3data

When installed, this program appears with a placeholder icon in the GNOME 'Applications' menu.

Also, g3data should appear in the set of right-click options for opening image files in Nautilus.

I reproduced the bug as well. Program gets installed under Graphics with no thumbnail.

I ll start working on this fix.

The first request is a simple one. I have a question though. If I don't find an image in the source-folder, should I create an image on my own, or contact someone else (developer f.e)?

As for the 2nd request, I m not quite sure how to deal with it 100%, but I ll get some help from the MOTUs if things get tough.

To provide an icon for a package, I use the following procedure:

A) Find an icon
1) Look through the distributed source for xpm, png, gif, jpg, ico, etc. to find something applicable.
2) Look at the upstream website for newer source versions, windows or mac downloads, or favicon.ico
3) Look in upstream bugtracker, forums, or mailing list for icon suggestions
4) Create an icon from scratch

B) Reformat the icon
1) Icons should generally be 32x32 for .xpm and 48x48 or 64x64 for .png - I use gimp to crop or clean
2) Icons should be provided in .xpm format, and optionally .png also. convert from Imagemagick is good for this

C) Install the icon
1) Icons belong is /usr/share/pixmaps
2) The debian/menu file (sometimes debian/<package>.menu) should use the icon (look in /usr/share/menu for examples)
3) The .desktop file should use the icon (look in /usr/share/applications/ for examples)

On the website there was a sort-of logo made out of blurry words. So I chopped it down to an icon sort of size that could be used. Attached.

BTW the application needs to be moved from the 'education' category to the 'other' category, or whatever it is that the fityk, gretl, and maxima packages (other numerical/scientific programs) are using.

The bug that caused many Science applications to use the Education category (or fail to appear in the menus at all) was only fixed very recently. During the last three development cycles, many applications were put in Education due to that bug. Please excuse the confusion while the menus are sorted.
