I ran into the same problem with karmic-beta
after update to kernel 2.6.31-14.47 (2.6.31-14.xx before)
the rt kernel 2.6.31-9.152 (newly installed with the same update) boots

I guess "sudo update-initramfs -u -k VERSION" would be the fix but i hope update to 2.6.31-14.48 will do that anyway
