tony_s: I doubt it's a permissions/privileges issue. My guess is that there is a kernel bug of some type going on and the process gets wedged in there, and so is unkillable until it returns, which never happens. In #225654, I posted a bit more detail about where I saw it getting stuck, in my case it's in a call to 'exit_mm'.
