I think most likely the problem is a side effect of the customizations this machine has experienced over the years. Like switching display managers multiple times, or using a non-standard kernel.

I would suggest the fastest way to a fix might be to just reinstall fresh: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
