@ fitojb - thanks - I did see some talk in #ubuntu-desktop yesterday, by the time I saw this it was EOD - so reported it while I remembered ...

Kev Bowring (flocculant) wrote :

While this appears to only show in LO apps, I also notice that the choice of Ubuntu Light for my desktop gets replaced with Ubuntu Thin.

@flocculant Thanks for flagging this. Could you report the second issue (mentioned in last comment) as a separate bug?

Thank you

@magdalena - I can of course. What to report against though?

comment #3> You don't need to speculate.

rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-ubuntu-font-family-arabic.conf

If that resolves the problem then this may be true. If not then it definitely is not.

Kev Bowring (flocculant) wrote :

@laney - did that, no change, rebooted just in case, still no change

Iain Lane (laney) wrote :

Then it's a problem with the regular font itself and not Arabic, thanks for confirming.

Chris J Arges (arges) wrote :

I have this same effect on my Xenial (Unity) desktop. It is especially evident in chrome with URLs that contain numerics.

And news from the font developers on a fix for this issue?

Without a fix we will have to revert to the previous version.

Subscribing John Lea.

Probably related with bug #1512111 ("Ubuntu Light" font has heavier weight than "Ubuntu").

This bug was fixed in the package ubuntu-font-family-sources - 1:0.83-0ubuntu2

ubuntu-font-family-sources (1:0.83-0ubuntu2) xenial; urgency=medium

  * Revert back to the previous 0.83 version: 0.84 has visual regressions.
    (LP: #1520772)
  * Clean up /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-ubuntu-font-family-arabic.conf
