Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release: 12.04

Libreoffice use linux-libertine in 3.3, 3.4 in 3.5 (see release notes: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/3-3-new-features-and-fixes/, http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.5#Writer) for their user of windows, mac os and linux directly in the package (see the direct downlaod page: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/). When you start ubuntu, you can use LibreOffice directly: it's out of the box. But, we could not use linux-libertine font. We need to download the package in software-center.

But, a lot of users of Libreoffice (who work on windows or on mac os) don't know that (see the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Libertine#Distribution) and send you documents with Libertine font. It's a bad thing for the interoperability between OS inside LibreOffice.

Expected: Linux-libertine must be integrate directly in an Ubuntu ISO, or after the install for the first update, this fonts must be downloaded.

Could we have Linux-Libertine in 12.10 ??

Actually, the situation is even worse than that. The Linux Libertine font supposed to be bundled in LibreOffice is *not* the one available in the repositories. Indeed, LO is shipped with the Graphite version (dubbed Linux Libertine G), while in the repos you can find the Open Type version (Linux Libertine O). While the first one handles perfectly ligatures in LO, this is not the case of the second one (it should, but LO doesn't fully support Open Type). There are a few other things that differ. So, even, if one install the Linux Libertine package in Ubuntu, he won't be able to see a document written with Linux Libertine under MS Windows correctly.

Where to download Linux Libertine G : http://numbertext.org/linux/

@ Hyogapag (hyogapag): Could you give an ODF doccument for test and screencast of it on windows and on Ubuntu (one without Linux Libertine, one with Linux Libertine for software center and last one with Linux Libertine from http://numbertext.org/linux/ ). Don't forget to give the version of windows and Ubuntu.

Well, I'll try to find someone with a Windows PC who will agree to lend it to me. ;) For now, what I can do is doing what you ask for on Ubuntu. I'll post it when it's done.

Ok, here what I come with :
I created a file using Linux Libertine O, from the repos, with italics and words that should be ligatured. I saved it (ex1.odt), uninstalled the font from the repos, installed the one from Numbertext, and reopened the documents : the font was then some kind of sans-serif fallback. This is shown in screen1.mp4
I changed the font of the document to Linux Libertine G : while it looks globally the same, italics are not handled in the same way (ok, not that obvious), and it now handles ligatures. I saved this new file (ex2.odt) This is shown in screen2.mp4

I think all that proves my point : someone with the Libertine (Open Type version) font from the repo can't read correctly a file sent by someone using the bundled Libertine (Graphite version) font.

@ Hyogapag (hyogapag): Sorry but i can't see where is your problem. A screencast with vlc is not a good idea, use a specific software like Kazam who save directly in webm. This format could be read directly in Firefox.
Secondly, you should make a spreadsheet in writer with tree colomms:, the first with text for users who want to test their configuration, second with an image of the Ubuntu's repository, the last with an image of the official Linux Libertine from the web site. Each image is a screenshot (reworked of course).
Each line will a short resume of what you expect.
What is your version of Ubuntu, your desktop don't have unity, do you use Gnome-Shell ??

@ Mozaic (mozaic) :
1. VLC handles webM very well, I just used the default configuration, which is h264. And efterall, I think a screencast is useless here (you didn't understand my point).
2. I made a spreadsheet, slighly different from what you suggested, but I think it proves my point.
3. I use XFCE.

Some explanation : a friend of I wrote a text using LO under MacOS (jeje.odt), and made a screenshot of it. Then, he sent it to me, and I opened it with LO three times :
1. Vanilla LO from the repo, no added font.
2. I installed Libertine from the repo.
3. I uninstalled the font from the repo and installed the one from the website instead.
Each time I took a screenshot. I then made a spreadsheet with writer (report.odt) so it's easy to compare the four screenshots.

So, as I said before, the situation is worse than the bug description says. I quote : "We need to download the package in software-center". Well, this is not a valid workaround because the Libertine in the repo is not the one from the website.
