upgrade to edgy degrades quality of fonts in vte and in firefox

Bug Description

After upgrading to edgy I noticed that the fonts in the gnome terminal (and other vte apps) and in firefox are fuzzier than they used to be. I'm going to guess that the hinting is different between these applications and the rest of the desktop.

I looked at Bug #40944 and Bug #39447 but I don't think this is a duplicate of either of those, particularly because this bug appeared on the dapper -> edgy transition rather than breezy -> dapper, but also because I'm fairly certain the font is exactly the same font, it's just the hinting that's different.

I will attach an image illustrating the effect.

This image was pulled together from a screenshot of one desktop at one point in time. The fonts are the same font, same size. The hinting appears to be different.

OpenOffice suffers also. I have to wonder if anything not using gnome/gtk+ is fuzzy. I'd have to do more tests to know for sure. Epiphany is a funny case too because the UI fonts are crisp but the Gecko fonts are fuzzy.
