Ugly fonts in apps using vte

Bug Description

Since I've upgarded to Dapper, applications using vte shows really ugly fonts.
With Breezy I was using Bitstream Vera Mono 8px for terminals (selected on system -> Preferences -> Fonts) and eveything was ok.
With Dapper and the same prefs, fonts look really ugly, with bad separations between letters.

I attach screenshot of gnome-terminal.

This also looks like #33144, but I'm seeing this with non-bold fonts as well, so it's not that bug.

If I change the DPI settings on Font Preferences to 98 (instead of 96, which i've been using since hoary days) terminal fonts seems to look like they did in Breezy.

Anyway, somo others fonts are still ugly (like epiphany). See #39447
