After I posted I found another workaround, maybe worth 98%. I was able to turn hinting back on. There is still an underlying bug.

add or edit xorg.conf as follows
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
