I was trying various applications and so far only Firefox (3.0) was able to display Arial Narrow properly:

Not sure if this information brings any value, though. OpenOffice.org, Abiword, Gnome and KDE font selectors are broken. Maybe Firefox uses some tricks to solve this issue? This is likely, since the site mentioned above defaults to monospace for Arial Narrow in Konqueror.
