I don't know what to do exactly, I solved the problem by creating a directory in /var/cache/flashplugin-nonfree
Seemed like the thing to try since the update installer kept complaining about not being able to find that directory.

Let me know if you want the whole bloody story, but its really not worth it. I followed the instructions in the Launchpad answers for "Ubuntu “initramfs-tools” package Questions Question #117247" Only got part way through when everything started working.

I don't know how to report this as SOLVED!
