During our premarital counseling, my pastor said always have someone you can call if the husband/wife is acting a fool. Good info from the others: getting the settings right and slip mat with plastic/wax paper layer below.

Another thing: The hole in the record is probably bigger than it needs to be, leading to small but violent sideways movements of the record during scratches.

Small gap? Stick a slim sticker through the hole. Big gap? More slim stickers. ...or put a sticker that covers the hole, on the side facing downwards most of the time, then gently force the record onto the turntable so the sticker cracks. (I can take pictures, but I'm lazy, ask if you need.)

If it gets too snug, it can slow down the record as you rewind, thats bad. The record is supposed to spin freely, just without the sideways jerks.
