I was affected also, upgrading Hardy -> Lucid (32-bit) on Thinkpad T41.
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.prerm
sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree
sudo dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree
worked. Then from from Synaptic I selected Adobe Flashplugin and installed no errors.
Now I'm updating the system via "update manager" and it is completed. gotta reboot now.
