I have the same problem.

I also think that it's related to the composite extension, which is default in edgy now (so not mention in xorg.conf).

The XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 firefox
works well for me.

I think simply add this line to the /usr/bin/firefox script
should be enough.
