Bug Description

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

When you try to upload a file with a Flash uploader to various services like http://www.picnik.com, http://www.vimeo.com or http://www.mediafire.com. Firefox freezes and stop responding. To close it I'd to kill the process.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

- Open Firefox
- Go to http://www.picnik.com
- Try to upload a photo
- Freeze

I'm using:

Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10
firefox-3.0 version 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu1
flashplugin-nonfree version 10.0.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1 (but it happened with the last package from Hardy too)

about:plugins in firefox shows:

    Nombre del fichero: libflashplayer.so
    Shockwave Flash 10.0.0 d525

I don't have installed libflashsupport.

I'd followed the procedures from: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs?action=show&redirect=DebuggingFirefox and I'm attaching the log.

I found some parts could be interesting so I'm going to paste it directly here with two explications:

I'm still using Intrepid:

Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10

I'm using Firefox:
3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu1

and flashplugin-nonfree:
10.0.12.10ubuntu1

about:plugins shows:
    Nombre de archivo: libflashplayer.so
    Shockwave Flash 10.0 r12

I still getting the same problem with the exact procedures from the original report.

I have installed Flash from the .deb of the official website, but it didn't work either. The bug is still there...

Same Problem with picnic and the others. Plus a non working flash-uploader in Wordpress 2.6.x, despite it doesn't freeze. It just won't open the file chooser.

The Flash related uploading problem in Wordpress 2.6.x is caused by a change in Flash 10 made by Adobe. See http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6979

I'm experiencing this with Flickr.com and Vimeo. The browser UI goes grey and becomes unresponsive. BUT, the uploads do progress and eventually complete and when they do the browser comes back to life. For some reason the upload seems to be blocking the rest of the browser.

When you say that the browser comes back to life... of what service
are you talking about? All of them?.

Same issue here. Both with
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r12
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r15

Both with Firefox 3.0.6 and 3.1b2

I also experience random freezing several times a day even when not uploading files, but it seems to be all flash related.

I'm using Shockwave Flash 10.0 r22 in Jaunty, the bug is kind of still there. I found that if you wait for about 5 minutes, Firefox is responsive again. Still too annoying!.

Also, I'm using the package from the partner repo adobe-flash-plugin (the same problem as flashplugin-nonfree though).

The problem also occurs using the 64bit beta version of the Flash Plugin.

This is a bug in flash player itself that has existed pretty much since file upload support was added to flash on linux, would all those interested in seeing this resolved vote for it to be fixed on the adobe bug tracker: https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-377 and if you feel so inclined leave a comment too.

The problem has existed for ages and the Adobe bug ticket was raised back in Mid 2008 but still adobe seem reluctant to give this the priority it deserves.
