Thanks for the link; I'll set up a FF build environment on my machine when I have a little more time and look at the component hierarchy in some more detail. My last time poking around in the Firefox source code was when it was still called phoenix, so it's gonna take a while to get familiar with the code-base again :-). Still, this "feature" has been annoying many people for years, so it's worth it.
