Not only that, but for proposed API to be successfull (even though it is "bass ackwards" to begin with) all browser vendors (Opera, Microsoft, Google, Mozilla) have to sit together with plugin vendors and work on specification. I don't see that happening in any foreseeable future. It means that this bug will never be resolved from an end user point of view. It won't make it into IE9, Opera 11, Firefox 4 and whatever is the latest version of Chrome.

Newsflash: If something is a priority, then you devote more resources to work on it. There has been _no progress for 10 years_ here.

So either nobody is working on it (which means it is not a priority), or those working on it are totally incompetent. Take your pick.

And we don't have to understand them. When you go to a mechanic to change your car's air filter you don't care whether mechanic has to take the engine apart or just to open the hood as long as he changes the filter. Software developers have become awfully spoiled prima donnas lately.

Please don't insult everyone's intelligence here by saying that it takes 10 years to do that.

The mere existence of this bug for 10 years speaks for itself. It is time for this issue to get the attention of wider audience, and because you are treating end users "as if they are this dumb", I am now personally going to take care of that either by contacting some IT journalists that I know, or by writing an article myself. Enough is enough.
