For the tab switching problem, one simple improvement would be to have Firefox just not pass off the control of the keys to the applet's domain if Firefox finds that you are already holding down the CTRL key when switching INTO any tab containing an applet. That way, you would be able to continue to cycle through all the rest of your tabs without getting stuck by the applet page, as long as you continue to hold ctrl down.

Sure, if you let go of ctrl after each tab press, this wouldn't fix the problem, but most people continue holding down the ctrl key and just release and repress the tab key each time. Sure, this also won't fix the problem of ctrl-tabbing away from a page containing an applet, but it will at least be obvious to the user in that case that there is an applet present and they can learn to circumvent this by clicking another tab with their mouse.

However, when cycling through ones tabs when not initially starting from a page with an applet, it is much more annoying, as the likelihood of you wanting to stop on that particular tab isn't very good.
