I did nothing special to discover this. This occurs on two freshly installed
Breezy boxes and one slightly elderly Debian Sarge.

Proportional is defined as either "Serif" or "Sans Serif". The two fields below
the Proportional selection are the fonts to be used for "Serif" and "Sans
Serif". The Ubuntu defaults for these two are the generic "serif" and "sans"
which appear to default to Bitstream Vera Serif and Bitstream Vera Sans
respectively.
